Meall a' Ghiuthais is primarily composed of ancient Lewisian gneiss, which is one of the oldest rocks in Scotland, dating back approximately 3 billion years. Its rugged appearance is a testament to the geological history of the region, shaped by glaciers during the Ice Ages.
From the summit, you can see the striking peaks of the Cuillin range on Skye, as well as the expansive vistas across the Isle of Raasay. On clear days, the blue hues of the North Atlantic Sea are particularly breathtaking.
The name Meall a' Ghiuthais translates roughly to 'Hill of the Spruce'. The hill's name reflects the ancient woodlands that once covered the Highlands.
The area is steeped in Scottish folklore and was historically important as a hunting ground for local clans.
